Did you know that Coco Chanel thought lipstick was the way to grab a man's attention?

Did you know that there is proper etiquette for wearing lipstick?

Lipstick is one of those makeup items that many consider to be a mature thing to wear. Many of us twenty-somethings resort to lip gloss or chapstick, but lipstick is making a comeback.

Lipstick sales skyrocket in a bad economy because it's seen as a luxury and a pick me up. Maybe it also has something to do with finding a man, like Coco Chanel thought. :) And it certainly doesn't have to do with people wanting to participate in proper etiquette. In the 1920s, it was appropriate for flappers to apply lipstick during lunch, but they could never ever be allowed to even think about doing that at dinner. It was a different world then...

So, what's all this hype about lipstick for? My mother always told me to never leave the house with putting a little something on...that it completes the look. It's taken me a while to get sold on this, but I agree now. :)

Customer Service: Silent Call for Help

When you think of going to the Post Office, you usually assume there will be a pretty long line, especially in a college town. Yesterday when I went to the Post Office, there wasn't anything unusual-there was a long line almost to the door when I arrived. One thing that was different, however, was that there was a sole man working the desk, immediately after lunchtime.

You could tell he was pretty exhausted, overwhelmed and tired. I've been to this post office before and he's been smiling, friendly and content with his job. Today, I'm pretty sure he would have rather been anywhere other than his job.

The people in line were anxious, frustrated and wanted to leave, but because they had to mail something, they had no choice but to wait. If the long line and single worker wasn't enough, there was a man in line who needed a passport, which the worker had to service.

The passport involved a significant amount of time as people grumbled, tried to leave and started to raise their voices. Even after the passport customer was serviced, the line continued to drag on at a slow pace.

All of a sudden, the postal worker brought out customer service cards. It seemed like a frantic move, his only way to bypass the frustration he knew he was up against in line. I call this his silent call for help.

He gave each slip to the customers in line with eyes like a sad puppy dog. For those customers who were clearly and loudly outraged, he told them quietly, "call this number and tell them what you think, give them a piece of your mind".

You could blame this on staffing, budget cuts or management...and all of that would be pretty fair to take an aim at. However, I see two major problems that some may overlook.

1)Customer Service Cards should ALWAYS be out! These aren't designed as a cop-out when things are going wrong, I'm sure companies want to hear about things going right more often anyway. Companies shouldn't be afraid to pass out customer service cards abundantly, after all, it's going to only help them grow.

2)Even if the time, type and circumstances of work are overwhelming, somethings are simply out of control and you always have the power to decide how you are going to act when treating a customer and facilitating your job duties. I remember working extremely long shifts at the front desk of a resort on a holiday weekend where the check-in line seemed endless and you would pray a room would be ready when the next guest came to you. Some days are harder than others, but you can never let the customer see that you are overwhelmed, apathetic or 'hopeless' when conducting your work and serving them. It's not their burden to bear. Again, you can't help the circumstances of understaffing, etc sometimes, but you do have the control to change the mood. By simply smiling, apologizing or showing some of his personality every customer in that post office would have been a lot more forgiving of the circumstance than him not saying anything at all.

There shouldn't be a need for a silent call for help such as this. Employees have the power to express real concern to management as well as the power to change the mood of customers and themselves when dealing with overwhelming situations. After all, at the end of the day each of us can only do our best.

Our Forevers, Go Together

In the midst of my weekend I'm devoting to studying Finance (HUGE exam coming up), I stumbled upon one of the cutest pictures I've ever seen.

Simple, elegant and meaningful the paper cut out saying, 'Our Forevers, Go Together' resonated with me.

It's what every girl wants, right? To find someone that they can be with forever. To feel loved, appreciated, wanted, needed and meant to be...together..forever.

I think it's hard in college when everything is a little crazy-and sometimes boys aren't in the same mindset as girls. Unfortunately there is a lack of the want to commit these days-I'm not saying it's everyone, but there are quite a few guys out there that don't really care about being with one girl right now...it's college..it's time to have some fun is what they think..what they say. And then there are the girls that I've talked to...frustrated with all of that and pretty heartbroken...just wanting to find a nice guy.

When I saw this picture-it reminded me of dear friends who are lucky to have found someone special in their lives. One of my lovely roomies got engaged a couple of months ago and I truly feel like their forevers, go together....there are people that just work, that are meant to be. You can see it when they are together-how they light up, how they just fit.

Remember that your meant to be is somewhere out there in the world...and your forever will match up with someone else's forever too....it may just happen when you least expect it to! Don't get frustrated or heartbroken, the best is yet to come.

Credit Card Craze

Credit cards have been around for a while-and almost everyone is aware of their sneaky gimmicks, the increased debt you'll have and all the fine print that no one ever reads that comes along with them. Children as young as a couple years old know that credit cards have a special value-they erase the limit you have to buy-they make all your dreams come true.

I've always been a complete skeptic of credit cards. I swore I would never get one-just like my Grandmother. Why do you need one anyway? You should only buy what you can actually afford. Right?

Well, I finally got reeled into it...and got my first credit card last week. A $500 limit, I can't do much damage...and I'm pretty sure it only works at one store. But that's fine with me. I got it because of the special deals-20% of your first purchase, money back after you spend a certain amount-it seems like more of a loyalty card than a credit card to me.....but that's just another gimmick.

I'm careful to pay it off at the store immediately after purchasing what I want with it. Surprisingly, the associates encouraged me to do this-they encouraged me to treat it like a point card. Maybe this encouragement decreases the debt owed to the company...maybe it makes people feel more responsible...or maybe it was just the personal opinions of the people I spoke with.

Regardless, I have one. And I pay it off right after.

It's kind of liberating in a way-to have a card with so much power (I know it's only $500 but you could do some quick damage). But there is such a threat to your finances if you don't use it responsibly. I know you've heard the consequences over and over again...but just remember, don't let the charges you make on your credit card sit there-get rid of them! Think of money on your credit card as a wall blocking your path-an obstacle on your ride to work...because sooner or later you're going to hit that wall if you don't keep knocking it down.

By the way, my credit card is from J Crew-my current favorite place to shop! :) Look at the picture for some of the perks..I'm not trying to persuade you, I'm trying to persuade you to be responsible if you do get one! :)

Customer Service: Everyday Life

Customer service is a part of everyday life. We come into contact with different kinds of customers every day-teachers, co-workers, roommates, family, fellow club members, teammates, managers and even random people you see in the grocery store or pass in the hallways. Every single person that you interact with during the day is essentially a customer. And you have the chance to either make a connection or disregard an opportunity every time you meet.

Making a connection can mean understanding each other's goals, sympathizing and empathizing with a friend's feelings or even just sharing a smile or opening the door for someone.

Disregarding an opportunity can mean ignoring a phone call, forgetting about a friend's birthday or passing by someone who has just dropped their books.

Who is your customer? Who did you make a connection with today? Who did you forget?

Asking yourself these 3 questions can really bring to life the opportunities you have to connect with your customers....whoever they may be!

Customer Service: The Medical Industry

One thing I dread the most is going to a doctor, the hospital, the dentist or another medical provider. It seems like although they can make me physically feel better after my appointment, throughout my entire time at the office I'm crunching my teeth, sweating at the palms and bursting inside with frustration at the total lack of customer service. Often times, I wonder if customer service is a part of their vocabulary at all.

I know I'm not the only one that has had a bad experience in the medical industry.

Talking with friends, family and co-workers, I have found the common consensus to often be that a visit to the doctor ranked high on the unsatisfactory and unhappiness scale.

One thing that many people argue is that the medical industry doesn't need to worry that much about customer service. Due to insurance, some people are 'stuck' with certain providers until additional ones pop up on their approved lists. Due to location, some people are forced to go to whoever is near by. Due to financial situations, some people are able to get better medical care where doctors are not overworked and have fancy offices and top of the line equipment.

Well, do they need to worry about customer service?

Of course they do! (I personally think everyone needs to think about customer service, business wise or in their personal life.)

The problem with medical providers believing the myth that they don't need customer service since people will always need them is just that, a myth. The problem is, as soon as their customer (patient) gets a new insurance card or a new opportunity to switch to a different provider, they will most likely take the chance if the benefits outweigh the current frustrations with the present provider.

A typical response to this would be-well, the medical provider will have plenty of more customers (patients) to service, so that loss doesn't really matter to them.

Well, it does. One of the most powerful ways of gaining customers (patients) or losing customers (patients) is through word of mouth. If a medical provider is so bad, and there is even another medical provider that is a step above, most people would switch. Again, if the benefits outweigh the current opinion with the present provider, people will leave.

Even if those two points don't convince you, think about the employees.

With my past work experience, I have learned that retention of employees heavily relies on the happiness, satisfaction, feeling of connection and sense of accomplishment of the employee.

I have never understood why a medical provider secretary ignores customers (patients), hides behind a window, minimally reacts with customers (patients), and rarely smiles. I think it's both sad and unfortunate to watch these people go about their jobs, hating every minute of it. If a little customer service was involved, it would brighten not only their day, but the customers' (patients') day as well.

When employees feel better about their jobs and actually enjoy them, the feeling is contagious and passes on to the customer (patient). Why shouldn't you enjoy going to the doctor? Or, at least feel a little more comfortable when going to find out if something is wrong? People already feel bad when they come into the doctor, and they should walk out the door not only having the tools to feel better physically but they should feel better mentally and emotionally as well with the process and experience of their medical visit.

Clothes Over 170,000 Years Ago

As I was perusing the UF student website this evening, I came across an article about humans, lice and clothes over 170,000 years ago. Gross? Maybe a little. Interesting? Definitely a yes.

Recently, David Reed, the associate curator of mammals at the Florida Museum of Natural History at UF, completed a 5 year study on lice. What he ended up discovering was data that concluded that humans wore clothes over 170,000 years ago. Because the clothes had no way to have lasted that long, we have no idea what they could have looked like! But research figured out that humans started to wear clothes around this time due to decreasing temperatures (the Ice Age occurred about 120,000 years ago. The man in the picture depicts what an IceMan would have been wearing) and because humans were starting to lose body hair. The assumption there is that we were really a lot like monkeys at one time!

Lice is strongly linked to clothing material, so it was concluded that because lice was around at this time, humans must have been wearing something to cover their bodies.

So, it makes me think...what have clothes done for us? Where have clothes taken us since 170,000 years ago? Sure, they may have started out as protection at first, but think about what clothes mean to us today.....

Clothes to me are a way of expression, stress relief (love to shop, but you already knew that), and a way to fit in to appropriate social interactions (you wear different things to different functions and places).

I wonder what I would have been wearing 170,000 years ago...I wonder if I would have cared.

Balance Sheets and Income Statements

Over break, I had to do a lot of financial accounting. Not just for school, but for my own personal financial health as well. :) As a college student, I know what it's like to wait for my scholarship to come in and figure out how to buy the dress I've been wanting and have enough money left for rent. :) One of my New Years Resolutions is to be smarter with money-and it couldn't come at a better time, right? :)

Now, as I start my first semester in graduate school as a combined degree student-my financial health is only getting more and more complicated. Tuition and books are more expensive and the scholarship has special notes about what can be spent on graduate courses...and then comes the stress of figuring out what to do after college. Getting a job, making money, being out on my own...paying for my own things without a scholarship. :) Complicated.

Fortunately for us, we don't need to hire a personal accountant to make balance sheets and income statements and other financial statements reflecting our personal growing or shrinking bank accounts. And, we don't have to spend hours and hours keeping up a journal of every one of our transactions.

Check out your pie charts of transactions based on categories or stores-check out what all of your accounts have in them and what you can do to start thinking of paying back student loans. As a generation growing up during a time of economic waves, it's time we start to really understand our personal financial health. And, it's time you took responsibility and checked out this site. I've been using it for years-and trust me, you won't find anything better.

A Whole New Year! :)

So, during the last day of 2010, I have spent the day doing homework. Preparing for the semester ahead, I've taken many notes, watched some lectures (on financial accounting yay!) and tried to make plans.

There are so many different kinds of plans to make. Plans for the day, plans for tomorrow, plans for the week, the month, the semester, the year, and even plans for after graduation.....!
I'm definitely a big planner/organizer. If there is something to organize and develop an efficient plan around, I'll do it-and enjoy it. I plan usually every day.

But, I know I'm not the only one planning today. You probably are too. :) Goals for the day, plans for tonight, resolutions for the year. So much to do.....

During our time of planning, it's hard to know exactly how to plan since we are waiting to first hear other people's plans-what's the plan for the economy? the government? the family? the school? the world?

What are everyone's plans?

The key to making sure your plans work out, is making them specific, achievable, adaptable and exciting! The thing about plans is that they may not always work out the exact way you had written down, but by sticking to the original idea-your plan can adapt and become a great reality for the new year.

So, I want to know.....what are you planning? What are your resolutions?

I'm planning on having a great year. :)

Customer Service: I'm A Person! Not A Transaction!

Do you ever feel like a company cares more about the bills you just placed in their cash register or the credit card number you just swiped than.......you? Their 'valued' and loyal customer?

Unfortunately, with the modern day practices of getting in and out of stores quickly, the priority of making as much money in an hour as possible, the habit of being as productive as possible throughout a workday and the strategy of charging a price in order for the most hefty profit to be made, it's easy for a company to overlook the one who is putting the bills in the register. But, that's no excuse. We, as their customers, are making their business run, right?

It's time to stand up and say...."Hey Company! I'm a person! Not a transaction! And, no matter what I want to get from your store, I know I can find it somewhere else and I know the experience itself will fortunately be a lot better for me."

As much as we may like to have this conversation with a store, most of us come to the realistic terms that, yes...if an item is a lot cheaper at a certain store or is one of a kind at a special store, than you are going to to go that company no matter what the experience, because all you care about is getting your item whether cheap or unique.

But when does experience outweigh cost?

What will it take for you to switch? To say you've had enough?

Crazy for Coupons

Everywhere you look these days-there is a coupon. Whether it pops up on your phone through a text message, comes up on twitter, messages you on facebook, is sent to you in the mail, or even passed out between classes-the coupon has always had a powerful effect on us.

Coupons are used by companies to develop a wider customer base, track customers, and overall entice people to buy the product. Whether is 20 cents or 20 dollars, people go crazy for coupons and we can thank Asa Candler for that.

Asa Candler was a pharmacist in Philadelphia who created coupons in 1895. He had just purchased the Coca-Cola brand from another fellow pharmacist and wanted to find out a new way to promote the drink-so he placed ads in the weekend papers about a free fountain drink called Coca-Cola. People went crazy, got attached...and it kind of explains why Coca-Cola is such a popular and traditional drink today.

It's my birthday this week and many companies have been sending me coupons for $5 off, a free scoop of icecream, a free movie ticket, and a free meal. These coupons increase my awareness of their brand, sway me into going to their store, and becoming more attached to what I received if it was a good experience. Companies believe in their products so much that they are confident that if I was to try their frozen yogurt once with a $1 coupon, that I would relentlessly come back even without another coupon because the experience was so good. (True story-try Red Mango, I'm addicted!)

I'm not the only one that is 'crazy for coupons.' If you search online, there are tons of coupon clipping clubs and tutorials on how to get the most out of your coupons. There are a couple sites dedicated to teaching people how to start their own Coupon Exchange/Trading Club. Instructions include: getting all your frugal friends together, deciding when and how often to meet, and the groundrules for trading. Competitions can be held to see who earns the most money and members are encouraged to search out every venue possible for coupons-now that creates an endless search-especially with the internet! :)
I even watched a show the other day, where a woman saved more than she spent, just by using coupons at the grocery store!

So, how crazy is too crazy for coupons? How often do you use them? Are you one of those people with a file folder of coupons? :)

Personally, I always love a good deal, so maybe I'm just a little crazy for coupons. :)

Customer Service: Treat Me Uniquely

One of the worst practices a business can take part in involves treating every customer the same.

Just like every two people aren't the same-every two customers are certainly not the same. Different expectations, wants and needs are all a part of the starting point for a unique shopping experience.

It is the store's opportunity to recognize the uniqueness of their customers in order to cater to them, matching (and hopefully exceeding) their original expectations of the trip. But, this doesn't happen as nearly as often as it should-even in well known companies and specialty stores.

Have you ever walked into a store and heard the cashier say the same exact conversation to every customer? Have you ever experienced a problem that wasn't able to be fixed because it was outside of someone's job requirements, or something they didn't encounter on a daily basis?

Unfortunately, I've had those experiences the last few times I've walked into a store. I leave feeling worse than when I walked in, frustrated and thought of as a transaction more than a customer. The truth is, I can go to many stores and be a simple transaction to them,but there are some that have discovered the secret of recognizing me and making me feel special. And, for that-I'd spend a little more money for a more enjoyable experience anytime.

Why don't these stores switch their mindsets? Why aren't the managers recognizing an opportunity that exists not only to improve the mood of customers, but the mood of their employees?

When I worked retail, the days were so long and customers would come in, not knowing what they wanted. I'd listen to my co-workers constantly complain about how customers continually kept picking through piles of clothes, messing up neat stacks they had just spend hours organizing and stickering, and then leaving without buying a thing. Sometimes you can't prevent your piles from being messed up especially if there are many customers in your department or area (after all they are there for the customer to browse through). But, I was able to find a way to protect my piles and send off customers with what they wanted. In turn, I was also not stressed or frustrated like my co-workers during or after my shift. How was I able to change this situation?

Easy.

By simply creating a conversation with the customer that is based on their needs and their wants, you can help show them what is available in the store and assist them in grabbing the correct size, color, or style while preventing numerous stacks of perfectly folded tops from becoming a pile of unfolded and unrecognizable shirts. You also are able to improve your workday by interacting with people-you never know what they will share with you, sometimes people will tell you the most interesting stories! And most importantly, you are able to provide an enjoyable shopping experience that many customers will remember.

So, I challenge you-whether you work or not, to change up your conversations. Instead of ending the conversation after a simple, 'Hello! How are you?', continue it by saying, 'I saw that you just joined a new club on campus, how's that going? I love that sweater you always wear, where did you get it? Who did you get it from?' or 'Have you ever been shopping here before? Who are you shopping for today? What occasion are you shopping for?' Further, follow up those questions with even more specific questions. People will immediately recognize that you care about what they have to say and they'll be more eager to open up to you.

By making your customers, or friends, feel more unique-you'll be able to establish a fast bond, in which trust is easily established, and a sale, or a friendship, is easily made. :)

Designer Spotlight: Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren, the brand, and all of its other product lines is the genius of Ralph Lifshitz, or as we know him...... the famous Ralph Lauren himself. He was born October 14, 1939 (we share the same birthday!)

Growing up, he grew up in a hardworking Jewish family and saved his hard earned money to splurge for expensive suits. From the age of 12, Ralph Lauren knew true quality and luxury and how to earn it. He studied business in college, but dropped out before he earned his degree. He worked at glove shops and tie shops before creating his own fashion empire.

Polo Fashions was founded in 1968, after Ralph Lauren had started to design some of the ties for the tie company he worked for called A. Rivetz & Co. He chose the name polo because of the power, style, and intrigue the name is associated with.

He worked hard enough on the brand to make it reach a pivotal point in the 1980s, when that was the 'go-to' suit for men. Shortly after, he began designing women's apparel and a home collection.

Now, he oversees a $900 million company and has a personal net worth of $1 billion. He was the first designer to own his own store and offer a lifestyle brand.

In addition to fashion, Lauren served in the U.S. army in the '60s and married his wife, Ricky Low-Beer when he was 25 and she was 19. He also has three sons.

Ralph Lauren has over 275 retail stores in the U.S. and over 100 around the world. He also has voting power of 90% of his company.

What I admire most about Ralph Lauren and his collections are the clean lines, classic taste, and high quality that all of the items that he has created. He knows the value of true hard work and makes every purchase worth the money you have spent on it. I personally just bought my first Ralph Lauren blazer and I'm in love!!!! What's not to like about Ralph Lauren, anyway? :)

The Age (And Value) of True Luxury

Some of the most ancient trinkets aren't worth a single dime, while others are worth millions and even billions of dollars.

Some of the newest items on the fashion lines sell for hundreds and thousands of dollars, while others go on clearance the minute they hit the shelves at Bloomingdales.

Luxury can be defined numerous ways and the age of the luxury items definitely affects its overall status, its value.

Luxury could be a day at the Ritz, or a simple outing at the local mom and pop restaurant.
Luxury could be a Tiffany&Co. ring, or a family heirloom.

Luxury doesn't necessarily mean that you have to spend all your money-it means spending your money on what you really want.

I admire vintage shoppers. Those that know the hot spots to find age old luxury at fine prices, where as most of the vintage items I find seem to be junk. How do you know if something vintage, is really worth something? I guess not only is beauty in the eye of the beholder, but so is luxury.

As they say 'one man's trash, is another's treasure'.

As our country continues to experience an economic lag, people are becoming more and more attracted to sorting through old antique shops, a place where they can find something unique, without being caught off guard by overpriced department stores. What makes them so much better than their competitors?

Starbucks puts their employees through training processes to mold them into the company culture of providing exceptional service to every customer. In addition to their high quality products, their high quality staff create a comfortable, relaxing environment that you want to keep coming back to time and time again.

Think about it; how special do you feel when you are getting a drink made especially for you, with your name on it, and you are recognized by the staff as you! (And, certainly not as a number or transaction like many other service chains.)

That's the key of the success of Starbucks. Much more than their wonderful lattes and frapuccinos, Starbucks reminds us all, customers and companies alike, that a consumer is more than just a transaction or a profit. Customers are people looking for an enjoyable and memorable experience. Further, they are looking for a relationship with a company. (Which the company surely wants a relationship with them as well!) For this relationship to occur, one must feel special, recognized and valued.

Next time you are at Starbucks or one of their competitors, think about how special you feel. Did your experience make you feel valued? Or, did you feel like another person purchasing a drink without a memorable interaction?

Customer service is something we should all take a little time to think about in order to improve our interactions with others in business and in our personal lives.

September Stylin'

September is that month where you are still holding on to summer but jumping forward to autumn. Those bright summer colors have taken up your entire closet and you are starting to think about where you stuffed those fall sweaters....in the attic perhaps? :)

As we transition from season to season, your wardrobe goes through a transition as well. But no need to completely wipe out your closet...you can still keep some of those summery inspirations and pair them with autumn influences.

Have a bright tank? Pair it with a great grey leather jacket or some nice leather boots. Pairing a brighter summery color with a neutral really subdues the color and makes it more acceptable for fall.

Have a flowery skirt? Pair it with a brown or white top and a nice braided cloth belt. this also subdues the bright flowery pattern and makes it perfectly acceptable for a nice outdoor fall bbq!

Some of my favorite colors are yellow and purple...not together usually, but the style board above shows how these two usually bright colors, can be taken in a more subdued glam approach-perfect for getting into that fall mood!

Shopping from the Couch

Tonight went as if it were any other night. I ate dinner, watched a little mindless television, did some homework and shopped online while sitting on my comfortable couch.

One of my lovely roommates joined me in this endeavor as we took the time to search and explore different options-finding deals on a myriad of websites and discovering gems, items we would never ever dream of being able to purchase.

Is this what shopping in the future is going to be like? Will online shopping get rid of our regular malls and outdoor shopping centers?

The truth is, online retail sales account to less than 7% of consumer spending. Does this number surprise you? It certainly did for me.

The deals you can seem to find online, along with special promotional codes exclusively for the site, give the consumer the impression that online prices are much more attractive than those in the store sometimes.

Although, the luxury of trying an item on to see if it has the perfect fit and the satisfaction of immediately having an item after purchase, drag down the pleasure of online shopping. And, let's not forget the dreaded shipping and handling price. Sometimes, this is what totally detracts me from buying online from certain companies.

But despite these setbacks, online shopping will never lose its hold on our leisure time. I have many friends, who like I, have shopping carts fully stocked on a variety of sites. It's pretty much like a hobby...you can trade and socialize about it with friends and enjoy the experience of shopping without going anywhere or even being in the same room as the person you are talking about it with! It also allows you to fantasize about an item or take longer to decide on a major purchase.

As I close up my computer tonight, my shopping carts will remain full and my favorite sites bookmarked, all ready for me to sit on the couch again in the next few days and start the whole process again. Because shopping from the couch, is here to stay. :)

It hasn't been too long since many of our favorite stores have placed a lot of their merchandise online. Browsing and searching through clothes we know that fit, jewelry and shoes to match, and typing in our credit card numbers on our laptops. Is online shopping really solving all of our problems, or is it taking the humanity out of shopping?

Setting Up My New Lilly Planner

It's time for a new semester! Summer is over, jobs and internships have ended, and now it's time to spend our our well earned money! Or, to try to save as much as we can after buying books and paying rent of course. :)

I want to start off by apologizing about my lack of posts this summer. I was busy interning at a resort and was working and learning so much, I didn't have as much time as I hoped to blog, shop, and write about how amazing fashion is right now! But, be excited for some great posts to come!!! :)

Getting back to school, one of my favorite things and some of my good friends favorite activities is school supply shopping! :)

Over the summer I discovered the Lilly Pulitzer store in Winter Park and during one of my last free days of summer, I drove all the way out there just for a pretty planner. :) Having the right beautiful accessories during such a stressful semester is really something that brightens up my day when everything becomes pretty overwhelming.

During this economy, consumers are trying everywhere to find a bargain. But something we haven't lost is our need to splurge a bit every once and a while. Maybe we deserve the higher priced bag after working hard all summer. Or, maybe we should splurge a little on those shoes that we absolutely love instead of settling for some that simply 'will do'.

I think it's human nature that if we restrict ourselves too much, we end up binging or becoming depressed about what we can't have. So, it's important to remember to treat yourself every once and a while. Or to simply, try something different and surprise yourself (this doesn't mean you have to spend more money) to try and alleviate stress and lighten up your life! My idea of the best splurge-devote time to go to TJMaxx or somewhere like that and just explore. Search...and you never know what you will find and be inspired by! :)

Splurging for Dream Shoes

Sometimes splurging is definitely the way to go. If you are in desperate need of the perfect dress or the perfect clutch for a special occasion and all you can find is something on the designer rack, sometimes you just have to go to it! (As long as you've worked enough to afford it of course!)

However, sometimes you aren't looking for something, and it just seems to find you.

I wrote a blog post about these pumps around Christmastime and how much I was in love with them. Well, when I was on vacation last week in South Carolina, I found them at Saks for a surprising price. :) I tried them on, tried to walk (they are super high), and fell in love. Then, I splurged.

With the help of my sisters and friend, I received the encouragement to just 'go for it'! Splurging can give you butterflies and even a little guilt. Butterflies of excitement and a little guilt for how much money you just dropped-how many hours you spent working to pay those off. But, sometimes it's just worth it.

Splurge a little, but not a lot. You can still find amazing deals, almost identical look-a-likes for much less, and you can often pair that exhilarating splurge with a dress you've had forever to dress it up a bit. Splurging on dream shoes or a dream clutch can give your wardrobe a face-lift that it may desperately need. :) Happy Shopping!

Buy Me A Mannequin

I've been sewing for less than a year, but I've been on a desperate search for a mannequin lately. I've been looking for dress forms online and in the stores, but maybe where I should really go is to the Garment District in New York City! :)

Yesterday, SIDEWALK CATWALK began an exhibit featuring mannequin designs by 30 well known designers. All of the mannequins are on auction until September 3rd, benefiting Materials for the Arts, which provides supplies for non-profit art groups and public schools in New York City. You can own a mannequin designed by Betsey Johnson, Tahari, or even Diane Von Furstenberg.

These may be a little more expensive than the adjustable dress form that I'm searching for, but they are still fun to look at, aren't they? :) If anyone has any ideas/suggestions about where the best place is to find a dress form...please let me know! I appreciate your help on this!

The look of the week got me inspired this week to mess around with Polyvore a bit. Fashion Inspiration From the Past

Trends and fads come and go. Some make a full cycle after a few years, a couple decades, or maybe even a hundred years. Others are retired at the very back of the closet just as fast as they appeared.

Many people in this day and age look back to the 1920s and the 1950s as more of the good old days. Were they the good days of fashion, too? Maybe...and maybe not.

According to Neil S. Fiske, chief executive of Eddie Bauer, “People want to believe in things that are American and want to be part of things that have longevity.”

Signature pieces and signature brands are often able to charge more for their products because of the positive feeling that is associated with their products. Wedding Fashion

One of my guiltiest pleasures, since I was about 12, includes watching all of those Wedding Shows. From A Wedding Story on TLC (the original wedding show of the century) to Girl Meets Gown and Platinum Weddings on WE to Whose Wedding Is It Anyway on the Style Channel, I've probably watched it. I absolutely love looking at the different bridal gowns, cake selections, venue decisions, floral arrangements, the embracing of culture and tradition, and the interaction of the future married couple (and their crazy families). :)

It is so amazing because you can look at real weddings based on theme and color. They have innovative ideas and gorgeous pictures. It is extremely interesting to see all of the different details these couples have come up with for their weddings.

I've thought a lot about my wedding to come, although I'm not anywhere close probably. :) But I have more of an elegant and classic taste, but I really love looking at the not so traditional weddings on Once Wed.

All of the wedding shows, blogs, magazines, and websites help show us all how to embrace our quirks, our special characteristics and incorporate them into weddings, or even just special events.

Vintage Vogue

One of my favorite pastimes is looking though magazines. I love opening up new issues and checking out the beautiful spreads, luxurious advertisements, and pushing my style boundaries with their crazy stylish tips. I always take an initial look through the magazine, then I read the articles, and then I'll continue flipping through numerous times deciding which advertisements are worthy of putting up on the walls in my room. My closet is overflowing with old magazines-it's always fun to look back at old trends and become inspired by spreads and articles that I may have passed over before.

The world of magazines seems to be a perfect place, everything is super stylish and beautiful. Something else I love is history, so when I found vintage Vogue covers-I was beyond thrilled.

Looking at vintage magazines gives us insight into what the culture of the day was really like. Often, it is the leisure activities of people that show us what they were really like. How they dressed was such a reflection of who they were-particularly starting in the 1930s and 1940s. During this time, people were finally recovering from the Great Depression and a new sense of fashion invaded society, especially for women. Everyone wanted to be middle class, or appear middle class. The idea of a middle class was new and exciting, even the upper class tried to blend in sometimes.

It's funny to think about what people are going to think when they look through our fashion magazines. Are they going to laugh or adore? Are they going to be disgusted or celebratory? More liberal or more conservative?

Personally, I love the styles of the 1920s-1940s. Simple, elegant, and tasteful..these classy times are something we can see inspiring different designers today, in a way that is growing with the times. It seems like fashion is always an adaptation of what has come before and innovation reflecting contemporary society. Fashion could never be boring, it's impossible! Ever changing and ever entertaining, I'll always enjoy my fashion magazines.

Sit Back and Relax

Summer is officially (and finally) here for a lot of us college kids. :) Thank goodness! But the spring season hasn't left us yet. Hitting up the beach, we should still embrace our springy pastels and flowers galore. Summer is not only a time to catch up on your tan and get some rays, finally flip through your fashion magazines instead of your textbooks, and chill out with friends on the beach or riding bikes around an island, but it's also a time for new goals and new kinds of work.

Goals for next semester, goals for your body, and goals for your future seem to fill up lists faster than it takes to grab a paper and pen. Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm the only one....but it's hard to shut off my brain sometimes and relax and truly learn to love summer. It seems like there is constantly something that can be done.

The world continues to spin, people continue to get up and go to work everyday, bills continue to need to be paid, and people can always go back to school for another certification or another degree. Our society, our generation, is growing up in a time when we have so much information thrown at us from all directions all hours of the day. Does this mean that we can succeed in more areas? Does this mean that our search for knowledge will only grow and we will only continue to build on everything? Or, do we need to take a breather and relax a bit, shut off our cell phone, shut off the tv, and shut our eyes and just breathe?

It's hard to breathe in a society where everything is pulling you in a million directions and you are moving a mile a minute. There is a new term for our generation called the "99 lives syndrome" which reflects the fact that we are trying to do so many things and live so many lives, that we are really living 99 lives at once. What's wrong with 1 life? Don't we all just have 1 to spare anyway?

Summer allows us to find that time to breathe a bit, even if we are holding a full time job (like myself). It's important for us all to find that time to relax, enjoy ourselves, enjoy others, and recover from our stressful, crazy lives. :) It will make our days a little bit easier and prevent stress from inhibiting all of those things we are trying to accomplish.

Luxurious Loyalty

The recession has proven to be unfriendly towards average consumers and major retailers. But how are luxury brands doing? Are they surviving and can we learn anything from them?

""There is a big difference now between affordable luxury and true luxury," said Scilla Huan Sun, manager of the Julius Baer Luxury Brands. "Affordable luxury still has a lot of long-term growth potential but it is more cyclical than true luxury, which remains very stable.""

Some luxury brands have lowered prices in order to increase their sales in this recessionary period and often plan on raising them again after the recession is over. Brands such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger used to be considered luxurious brands but now, can be labeled affordable luxury, as more and more consumers are able and willing to buy their items.

Companies like Hermès and Louis Vuitton were able to increase their profit growth during the recession, despite fears of losing drastic amounts of money. Neither company lowered their price, but instead maintained their status quo and continued to make high quality wearable pieces. Studies showed that consumers that purchase these luxury goods are not affected by the economy and are able and willing to spend more money on these goods.

Luxurious brands lowering prices may be exciting to the average customer, as a handbag that was only pictured in your dreams can now be pictured in your closet. However, lowering the prices has hurt the prestige of the brand and the long term growth of the brand. Once everyone has something, or once something is more readily available, it loses that extra factor which made it so sought after in the first place.

Further, lowering the prices of our luxury brands here in America, hurts our American economy. As foreign brands retain and maintain their status and price, ours continue down a downward slope, only creating a steeper and more impossible uphill climb back to the level of prestige.

I suppose one of the biggest lessons we can learn here, is that even in a recession when short term profits and day to day living can control our lives, we can't forget to think about the long term investments we need to make in order to protect our talents, assets, and even our product, if we are a retailer. That may be one of the biggest obstacles of our generation-the now generation, who wants everything and anything right now with both prestige and a good price. What luxury brands are showing us on paper, is that this mindset doesn't work and although adaptation is a must, you can't short sell yourself either.

Death of the Shopping Mall?

I used to work at a mall, one that was the only place people could go to stores like Dillards, Hollister, American Eagle, and JCPenny within a 30 mile radius. It was also the only mall around with a movie theater. And, it was a place where many parents dropped off their kids for the first time to hang out with their friends to browse the shops.

Now, that mall is about 75% vacant.

Malls everywhere are facing a long down hill battle. According to the CBS Early Show, for the past two years, not a single mall has opened and in 2008 about 150,000 individual stores closed nationwide. Lifestyle centers have become the brand new alternative to shopping enjoyment and a new destination for previous shops that took their place at the mall.

So, what's left in our malls?

Many vacant spaces are being rented to dance troops, karate studios, seasonal shops, and other unconventional leasers. Their previous owners have most likely moved across the street or a few minutes down the road to an open air lifestyle center, which offers a more relaxed, outdoor experience for shoppers. Most of them have parks, or are modeled after town squares.

Lifestyle centers are unquestionably much more attractive and appealing. They encourage shoppers to take their time to browse, and many offer a balanced mix of boutiques, anchor stores such as Target, and even discount retailers like Marshalls and TJMaxx. Lifestyle centers are more than just a shopping destination, they are an experience destination you can continue to return to even if you don't plan on buying anything.

But, what is the future of our old malls? Is there anything we can do to save them? Or are they going to sit there, sadly, vacantly, and worthlessly, until an investor gets enough money to plow over the land and put up something new?

Dressing Rooms Get a Makeover

Dressing rooms are getting a makeover. The addition of technological advances, free flowing movement of rooms, extreme levels of service, and a more relaxed ambiance are replacing dim lighting, small spaces, and unclean spaces to try on clothes.

"When you are in a store looking to buy an item of clothing, there are two moments of truth--when you take it off the shelf and when you try it on in the store," says Fred Dust, partner at Ideo, a business design consultant firm with offices worldwide. "The better the retailer makes the trying on experience, the more likely the shopper will buy the item."

I completely agree! Have you ever picked off an item from the rack, but then when you got to the fitting rooms, you felt so exhausted and overwhelmed that you didn't even want to take the effort anymore to walk in and try it on?

Bloomingdales is trying to alleviate the pain of trying on clothes by allowing you to look at yourself with virtual images of clothing and then having the ability to send the images to your friends. This creates the communal shopping atmosphere, even if you are shopping alone! There is even a way for friends and family to buy the item for you after they see you in it at the store and a way to see more selections, so you aren't limited to what you had just grabbed on your way in.

The very top picture is actually from a Nordstrom in Hawaii which they call the 'girlfriend room'. Retailers are recognizing the power of group shopping and enabling shoppers to have an experience with their friends within the fitting room, instead of coming out in front of everyone in the store and asking, 'how do I look?' It looks like a hotel room, doesn't it?

Other retailers are using technology to allow shoppers to search for sizes themselves and alert salespeople to get the size for them without ringing a bell and waiting. Others offer features that recommend other items to you or help you put together an outfit right in the store. Something else that is pretty neat is that you can save your previous outfits so you can remember what you looked best in and make the right choice without trying and retrying over and over again.

The mood we feel once we put an item on is usually the deciding factor in our purchase decision. We don't usually buy things that once we put them on, we are passively neutral about or not really excited-it's often not worth the investment. You want to enjoy the shopping experience and enjoy your new item as much as possible. You want to walk out of that store planning the time, date, and place you are going to show off your new outfit, and retailers are hoping the same for you as well.

Maybe nicer dressing rooms are not what we have directly asked for, but retailers are trying their best to drive customers to the store and embrace them to the fullest and provide the optimal shopping experience.

But, do fitting rooms really have that big of an impact? Can they determine where we shop and how much we spend? What do you think?

So it's that time of year again, spring and studying.
The semester is almost over, but not quite, and summer is within our grasp, but too far away to feel the sun.

While I've been studying nonstop it seems (reason for the lack of posts lately), I've thought about how the design around my studying area can affect my mood, for the better and for the not so beneficial.

I feel like this lamp would help me study a lot better, not too distracting, but just a little whimsy to pick up the mood. :)

Ever since I was a little girl, I've posted magazine advertisements and shopping bags all over my walls-recognizing how different ads can complement and play off each other and how I can tell a story on a plain white wall. (or at home, it's pink of course!)

I think one of the best keys to studying and to design is simplicity and touches of surprise. If there is too much going on in a single space, it can be confusing and overpowering. But, if you allow a collection of pieces to speak for themselves, it can add more value and provide a much better scene for a nice little study break.

It's the first official day of spring! Time to go through those closets and see what spring dresses you have from last year and what new colors you need for this season! Make sure to get a good mix and match, you can usually use most of the same accessories and shoes for your easy to wear dresses!
I've been celebrating spring early this week by wearing my spring dresses-check out Forever21 and Abercrombie for some surprising lovely looks! Time to go shopping! :)

Where Did High Heels Come From?

How did we get to the amazing closets full of heels we have today? I bet you wouldn't have guessed the journey heels traveled on to get where they are now.

All the way back in 35oo B.C. the Egyptians had some fashion sense. The first high heels made their appearance on high status men and women and were also popular among the butchers. In Ancient Rome and Greece, high heels were popular with those in theater indicating the level in society of the characters. Finally in the 1400s, high heels began to become more mainstream in Turkey and became a predominately female fashion trend. Can you believe people wore these?

These heels were called chopines. The Venetians tried to take them to new heights. Some of the heels that were created in this time were outrageously high, a lot more difficult to walk in than we have today! Heels then became popular with horseback riders-both male and female so they could stay in stirrups better.

The formal invention of high heels is contributed to Catherine de Medici who was at the time engaged to the future King of France. She was relatively short so for the wedding, she wanted to appear taller. The people of France noticed her new graceful walk and poise when she wore them, and again high heels became a wish list item. Royals, both male and female, were still predominately the ones that wore them. In 1580, many were described as 'well-heeled'.

Throughout the 1700 and 1800s, different religious organizations thought of heels as unfitting for sensible women and things of the devil. Still, it was seen as a status symbol and were extremely expensive and hard to come by.

In 1888, the first heel factory was opened in America. Thanks to the sewing machine, heels were easier to make and could be made more widely available. As the U.S. began to enter an age of industrialization and movie stars made their way into our lives, the heel became more and more emphasized and more and more wanted by women.

Thank goodness we made the journey from the ancient Egyptians until now, I love my heels just the way they are! Below are my dream heels, Christian Louboutin of course! :)

Balancing Snow and Flowers

We are all ready for spring, no matter if we've been suffering snow the past couple months or trying to survive this awfully frigid weather down in Florida. I'm ready for spring and spring styles, so I'm starting right now, by embracing spring and combining both florals and trying to keep warm.

Tights are one of the best inventions-our generation got around to not wearing them very much because they were seen as old-fashioned, but now with all the textures, prints, and colors, tights are fun again and not only provide warmth, but style! :)

The easiest way to keep the cold weather in mind while dressing for spring, is by using these bright and beautiful tights. Or, if you have a crazy floral patterned dress, a nice neutral like black warms the overall tone of the outfit and takes something super spring to acceptable for this transition period.

A great way to also embrace spring is through your accessories. Don't be afraid of a mismatch, mix it up, throw in chunky and sleek styles for an overall put together look.

The World of Retail Therapy: Combating Oniomania?

The United States is a massive consumer nation. Even in this time of recession, we are still able and willing to splurge a little on unnecessary items-why?
To make us feel better of course.

Over the years, there have been countless studies linking sadness with spending.

"Shopping can temporarily take people's minds off their troubles. Also, shopping for things we like can help us feel better about ourselves -- for example, clothes make us feel we look better." said Nadine Kaslow, professor and chief psychologist at the Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Oniomania is a medical term for the compulsive desire to shop. There are actually patients treated for an addiction to shopping--this takes Confessions of a Shopaholic to an entire new level, huh? :)

So what are we to do? Stop shopping? Is shopping engulfing our lives?

The recession has allowed us all to look back at our spending habits and think about our money. Whether it be our hard earned money or money we were getting from our parents, we should hopefully understand the strain of finances a little bit better. Or at least I hope we understand, so our economy doesn't experience this because of us again.

I have to admit that I often participate in a little retail therapy. I think it is a good pick me up, something that makes one of my hectic and crazy day just a little bit better. Although, I, as I'm sure you have all noticed in your own lives, know that a new shiny pump or flowy new dress only makes you happy for a limited period of time. And that although retail therapy can be a good pick me up, it doesn't solve all of your problems, if that is what you are searching for it to do, anyway.

It's important to feel good about yourself and like the way you look and that is what your expression of wardrobe is supposed to do-help you look and feel better. I guess it all goes back to what's on the inside that counts, or what is on the inside is really what reflects how amazing you look and feel on the outside. After all, that new cashmere sweater isn't going to go everywhere with you. :)

I didn't mean to get too deep but I thought it was just something interesting to think about!
And, don't feel guilty for shopping after reading this. Just make sure you aren't going too crazy or looking for it to provide you with more than it can. :)

Rainy Days? Don't Let it Drench Your Style

Don't hide inside from the rain, embrace it! And show off those cute little rain boots, a brand new umbrella, or classic trench. You'll be the shining light in the stormy day.

Boutiques, discount stores, department stores, and online sites are full of the cutest rain boots and umbrellas to get you ready for spring showers or to just get you through the winter's last snow and rain.

Trench coats are a classic wardrobe item that can be worn in the rain, used to bundle up, or even to just complete an outfit. I'm still on the search for my staple trench, but I know it's out there! Burberry has my dream trench.

One of the worst things about rainy days, especially in the humidity of Florida is the dilemma facing hair aka Frizz! It seems as if wearing your hair down is an impossible feat in the rain, without turning out like Albert Einstein at the end of the day. So, I've found a few cute updos and I hope you'll try them (I'll be experimenting) and let me know what you think! :) Stay dry and stay cute!

Layers of Snow: A New Challenge for Conservative Women in D.C.

This week, I've been attending the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington D.C. It has been a high of around 39 and snow is covering the ground everywhere. For this Florida girl, the winter weather has added a bit of a fashion challenge to my wardrobe. So, I've been practicing the layer approach.
Let me tell you--layering tights, really does work! Hopefully you won't rip yours like mine did, but they have still kept my legs warm. :) And, you can always wear them under pants for an extra bit of insulation.
I've also learned that the best and cutest way to dress up that same coat you always wear is through fun gloves and scarves (maybe even through in some earmuffs if you are daring). Accessories are key to a fun wardrobe in the snow.
While I've been at the conference, I've seen a ton of important political figures and some wonderful famous women as well-with great fashion sense I might add. :)
One of my favorites so far, has been Phyllis Schlafly. She was born in 1924 and has an elegant and poised style. Classic pieces like brooches, hair pins, and pearls are what I washer inspirational pieces. The classic look can never do you wrong-no matter how old you are. :) And I think it's something many people disregard as sometimes looking 'old' but it's not. The classic look can make you look put together and mature looking, but it certainly doesn't mean that you're dressing like your mother. :) (Not that that's a bad thing!) :)
I do honestly look forward to normal Florida weather again, and can't wait to wear my sundresses and flip flops. :) I've been looking through my magazines at the spring collections and I'm so excited! :) More to come on all of that, but for now, stay warm everyone and don't forget to layer! :)

I can't thank you all enough for following my blog, it means the world to me that you all have supported me in my vision. I try my best to write about more than just clothes and to write about the issues surrounding them-topics that no one else really pays that much attention to, but are extremely intriguing to me and I'm happy to say to you as well! :)

I started off this blog as sort of an experiment-I had no idea how to work blogs, what they really were, or what they could do. It evolved into so much more than an experiment and I wish that I could blog multiple times every single day. I love it!

Looking towards the future, this blog is only going to get bigger and better, but I'll need your help. Just like I need your support, I'd love to hear your ideas, your interests, and what fascinates you about fashion, history, business, etc! I'm open to a variety of topics! Especially when the weather is FREEZING, make sure you cover up! An easy way of keeping warm is picking warm, textured fabrics. If you don't like to layer and layer, try this for size. You can also layer your tights or choose sheer or textured if you want to keep things simple. :)

Guys and Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day.
Love. Chocolate. Flowers. Mushy Stuff.

Everything we'd ever want to come to life from a Chick-Flick.
But what about the guys? What's going through their minds on Valentine's Day?

As I was recently running a few errands, I walked into Publix and was instantly overcome with a scene of a huge collection of guys. All grouped together, focused, in thought, and huddled-not over a football game, not talking about 'manly' stuff, no they were all grouped around a bunch of greeting cards.

I had to contain myself as I strolled past them, I was so intrigued by their behavior. The night before Valentine's Day, I guess, is the time to get a card, flowers, and chocolate for that special someone. Good thing Publix puts them all in the same place! :)

Did you know that Valentine's Day is the 2nd largest card selling holiday, just behind Christmas? And, according to the U.S. Greeting Card Association, men spend an average of twice as much money than women on Valentine's Day?

Many men proclaim they only go shopping for a few reasons-when they run out of food, when it's Christmas, when their significant other makes them, or when it's Valentine's Day. :) Now, I'm not complaining and I'm not putting guys down-it was one of the most adorable things I've ever seen when I observed them all frantically trying to pick out the appropriate Valentine's Day card. I wanted to go over so badly and help them find the perfect card for their perfect someone. But I guess that would have been a little weird. :)

Men and women shop differently. VERY differently. In posts to come, I'm going to look at this a little more in depth. But for now, back to the main question, what are guys thinking about on Valentine's Day?

Is it something they feel like they have to participate in, or something they look forward to celebrating? Do we as women, show them as much appreciation as they show us? Or has society made this holiday more about what women expect from men, rather than celebrating the relationship or the couple?

I'd love to hear what you think, but for now, Happy Valentine's Day boys. :) I hope you didn't have too much trouble finding that perfect card, I'm sure she'll love it.

Thanks for Everything Bryant Park

Whether you've been lucky enough to attend, have seen it flipping through magazines, or remember the name from any episode of Project Runway, Bryant Park is undoubtedly a symbol of American Fashion. Bryant Park is "Fashion's Biggest Stage" (Tim Gunn). As the shows start to begin and we get to see the new styles and trends, the mood is bittersweet this year because this is the last Fashion Week at Bryant Park. In September this year, it will be moved to the Lincoln Center.
Since 1993, Bryant Park has been a center for fashion, celebrities, and hype over couture. The first show was on Halloween and before that, designers were all over New York creating fragmented and limited audiences. Once the designers came together and the shows became centralized, Bryant Park was able to push itself to a level in order to compete with Milan and Paris. America now had a fashion capital and designers had a new international market. According to Eric Wilson, a fashion reporter, "Voices weren't being heard until they were all in one place."
Bryant Park was originally chosen because it was basically the only open available space near the garment district, where many designers have their offices. This makes the ease of transition from wardrobe closet to runway as simple as it can get. However with the move to the Lincoln Center, designers may not have as much time to make quick last minute changes. But, Bryant Park was meant for the people to enjoy and Fashion Week has slowly taken that away from the residents of the area. Over the years, it has become more and more difficult for designers to work with the park. In an interview, Diane Von Furstenburg compared it to a bad boyfriend relationship, sometimes after you've had enough you just had to let go and say goodbye.
Although Bryant Park hasn't been a bad relationship for fashion, I guess it's time for the designers, the collections, the press, and us to move to another side of the city. It will be interesting to see if the move affects the crowds, the global perception, or the designer's sales. Will it be bigger and better? Or a total nightmare? Will we still see white tents?!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but we know for sure, that fashion is always evolving and the stages will continue to get bigger and bigger (no matter what's happening in the economy). I'm excited to see what comes of the collections this season and I'll definitely be keeping you posted! :)

Shopping Surprises: A Tale from the Shopaholic Herself

I am a passionate shopper. I like to shop in malls, high end stores, flea markets, bargain stores, grocery stores, online, and pretty much anywhere I can. :) Call me a shopaholic; I'm not offended one bit. :)
So after a stressful week, as I'm sure we all had one, I decided there was nothing better for me to do than to take a break from all the work I still need to do, and try a little retail therapy.
I wasn't on an avid search for a single item, I had a gift card at one of the department stores and started there. Great sale on boots, nice. (If you are looking for boots, I highly recommend Macy's right now!)
Then I found a great wrap that was price marked at $0.01! Yes, I'm serious a single penny. This wrap was originally over $60 and I knew this was wrong. The saleswoman rang it up and it did come out to be one cent! ahhh! Am I dreaming? Then she realized it had to have been wrong, changed the price, and of course I was no longer as excited....so I didn't buy the wrap. That's okay, my heart wasn't set on it...it was just an exciting find.
After the mall, I was ready to hit the grocery store, but decided to be spontaneous and go into TJMaxx. Sometimes I have good luck and other times I don't, but this time...was a good luck kind of time. :)
As soon as I walked into the store, I went to the accessories. I've been searching desperately for a black belt to cinch my dresses and flowy tops, and I'm loving those strappy heels right now-the ones that are a play off of gladiator sandals. (Still deciding if they are for me though.)
Anyways, I found a headband in the clearance section...and thought it was really super cute. I had never heard of the brand before, and it was still a higher price for a headband in my mind, but I had this feeling there was something special about it....well, there was!!!
After my shopping experience had ended and I sifted through my new retail loves, I decided to do a little research.
Well, I ended up getting a headband whose collection ranges from $90-$220 dollars for $14.99. Guess that little splurge was worth it, and I guess you can have a little shopping surprise every now and then, it's definitely worth the risk! :)
Moral of the story: You never know where you'll find a hidden shopping surprise! :)

Materialism Manic

We live in an age where consumer spending accounts for most of our GDP(Gross Domestic Product-measurement of our country's economic success/output). How fortunate we are to be able to spend spend spend and buy buy buy, when many of our grandparents and great grandparents couldn't even rub two nickels together.

Where did the materialism manic start? Did it start with us? Did it begin a long time ago? And, further, is it even a problem?

At the beginning of civilizations, there were always people around the world who struggled to make money and then there were others who were granted status and wealth--because of their birth, heroics, or some unusual fortune. When America began, we worked from the ground up to build something for ourselves and for our families. We focused on the necessities-food, shelter, and clothing(the minimal amount, and mostly hand-me-downs for sure). And then, all of a sudden, we were over the necessity stage and began to specialize our time, grow our talents, and find new facets of interest.

I believe materialism can truly be traced to the industrial boom period in the late 1800s-early 1900s. This is when mass production of garments and products began, and people began to accumulate wealth, or at least some change in their pockets.

Women went to work and many of them felt the urge to fit in, to look like the upper class and wear hats, fancy coats, and really cared about how they presented themselves. It is even noted that many women starved in order to buy new clothes to fit in with the age. And, this was in the early 1900s! Doesn't it sound like something that still happens today?

Materialism is one of the pillars of our American culture. Many of us believe we have worked hard to afford it, that we deserve it, and we should take advantage of living in such a prosperous country. What we can't take for granted however, is how we ended up getting here. Is materialism something to be proud of?

Our economy holds true to show us today, that materialism manic isn't always a good thing. It creates a feverish fervor inside-- increasing our wants and blurring our needs. Like most things in life, balance is the best policy. Maybe we needed a little push on the other side of the teeter-toter to show us that our materialism manic needs to be kept in check.

History of the LBD

I recently have gone crazy with ordering books from my library-who knew the library could be such a good source for fashion? One of the books I got is called "When Royals Wore Ruffles" By: Pamela Jaber. It's actually a 5th grade reading level, I had no idea! (I'm totally buying it to read to my little girl in the future!)This book definitely taught me some things, in a fashionable alphabet kind of way....

The Little Black Dress (LBD) was not considered appropriate for anything except a period of mourning or attending a funeral for a very long time. Coco Chanel, in 1926, introduced the LBD as something classic and simple; something that would slim any woman's body and make it look amazing! Women everywhere went crazy and it quickly became a staple in wardrobes, which has still stayed with us today.

I know I definitely have a couple black dresses, and they really are a perfect grab and go when you don't know what to wear! Interviews, graduations, dances, dates, and other affairs have all seen a number of my LBDs.

Where Does Couture Come In?

As I flip through pictures of fashion shows in Paris, Milan, and New York, wishing I was sitting in the front row, having the ability to admire the craftsmanship and detail first hand, I often wonder...how does couture really fit into our lives? Are we expected to go out and buy the 'hot new fashion' right off the couture runway? Of course not! Our wallets couldn't sustain it and we would ruin the precious garment in an instant. Couture represents a dream land; it is the area a designer has no limits and can experiment. Designers use this time to show their talents and break through the box...unleashing their ultimate creative potential.

Couture often has so many different parts to an outfit that it can be overwhelming, but what we can do for our own wardrobes, it look at couture outfits in pieces and structures. For example, the silhouette created in the suit on the left, can be used for inspiration for a suit that would be a more suitable color for work, also the accent of buttons is a way to glitz up an outfit. The sparkling accents of the outfits in the middle and the right are another way we can adapt couture to daily life. By taking away a piece of a couture outfit, we can create an accent piece in our own wardrobe for the day.

Charity and Retail: Making Money and Giving Away Products

In a rough economic time, many people can't afford the kind of necessities many of us take for granted, namely,clothes. A few weeks ago, there was a New York Times Article about the homeless in New York and major fashion designers that donated loads of items to the cause, taking the form of the New York Clothing Bank.
I was surprised to learn that so many retailers actually destroy a lot of their merchandise if it can't sell. I figured people would buy most of it at clearance or major department stores would just ship it off to outlets and sell to discount stores to try and make a little extra money. No, many don't donate, don't sell, just destroy and make room for new merchandise.
It sounds like the New York Clothing Bank and the designers that donate to the cause are doing the right thing, who wants to put down charity? What I learned from reading the article further, was it wasn't just all positive effects.
What do you think about this? Major retailers don't want poor people to wear their brand, because it makes consumers not want to wear their clothing. Do you agree?
The solution to this has been cutting out the tags, but does this solve everything?
Let me know what you think about this! I think it's a really interesting topic, because charity is supposed to be so wonderful for everyone, but is it a win-win for retailers?

Marketing: What We Want and How We Feel

In mid-July of last year, a study was released by business professors at Villanova University and the College of New Jersey questioning the way we want to be marketed and how it makes us feel. In fashion ads, we often see super skinny models, curvy in all the right places models, perfect skin models, totally toned models...... the list goes on and on! We immediately start to associate the word perfection with these advertisements and then we look in the mirror, see ourselves, and start to scrutinize. Maybe we don't all do it, but a majority of women have a lower self-esteem and are less happy with themselves than decades previous to ours.

In the New York Times last week, an article by Eric Wilson brings to attention the new poses of models on advertisements. A new 'laying down' approach seems to be what is selling, so that is what marketers are going to capitalize on. Is this what we are asking for?

The study that was conducted at these colleges, exposed women to various advertisements showing typical models we see in advertisements on the road, on the television and in our magazines. After the study, the women were offered a snack for their participation. A majority of those who were exposed to thin model advertisements declined the snack pack of cookies. Instantly there was an effect, one that made individuals question their body and their eating choices.
We all wish we could have the perfect body, could eat all we want and not have it affect our thighs one bit! :) Although, this is what is marketed to us day in and day out and we continue telling companies this is what we want to keep seeing. As we all strive to be something that is unattainable, and placing a target farther and farther down the road, the question remains, what do we really want and how do we really want to feel? Accomplished as we are? or Determined to fix all our imperfections?

The Emotion of Shopping

During this time of economic recession, many of us would feel as if people would have stopped shopping as much, and yes the numbers have gone down, along with our GDP, but.....people haven't stopped feeling the emotion of shopping. We all know the feeling of getting something new, something that surprised you in the store window, you didn't even expect to get it, but...it's now inside a beautiful bag you are showcasing on your arm as you continue your shopping excursion. :)
Okay, so maybe that's a bit dramatic, but hey, we all feel great about our new purchases right? In times of stress and economic worry, we still search for things that provide us comfort, things that surprise us, and things that can make us happy-even if it's only for a little bit.
Recently, the fashion shows in Paris, London, Milan, and New York City showcased the Spring collections for this year. Something everyone is talking about is a return to youthfulness, structure and basics, and the use of emotion and clothes. If a designer can create a masterpiece that can keep us feeling great about ourselves for years to come, isn't that a powerful emotion that has all been derived from shopping? Isn't it worth it to spend some of that hard earned money on happiness? On clothes? It may seem a bit shallow, but shopping and emotion is really a powerful team. After all, it never is just a dress or just a bag, is it? :)

Athletic Fashion and Safety at Night

It's always so easy to grab a free t-shirt you got last week, a pair of gym shorts or sweats, and your ever dependent running shoes when you are looking for something to wear to the gym or go out for a jog around campus or your neighborhood. Sometimes you see the girls with matching outfits, cute athletic wear many of us think of as 'too good for the gym' and more for 'lounging around'. Well, some retailers are bringing the best of both worlds together, practicality and fashion, in a more affordable way, and not only that, one that keeps us safe at night in the winter cold.
It's always a big concern for runners and those who like to exercise outside at night or bike around town at dusk, to be noticeable to traffic and get a good workout without being worried about getting hit. Enter the race........reflective jackets! Reflective wear is nothing new and these jackets are definitely nothing like what the orange crossing guards wear or vests you may have had to model while volunteering picking up trash on the side of the road (awfully ugly things!). Pink, green, yellow, and even black jackets have been formulated with new reflective material great for a night jog. And, many have a unique layer inside just for the winter time to keep you warm as well. Now, you've got a fashionable warm ensemble and the hardest part is up to you-getting out that door! :)

Body Type Showcase: Eye on Size

There has always been increasing drama around the use of super skinny models on the covers of magazines, walking down runways, and talking on tv shows. Last week, as I was reading the New York Times, I stumbled across an article about the use of plus size models. Many magazines have tried to showcase this area of the industry, failing to celebrate the women and their shapes or condemning the rest of the modeling world as being unfair to plus size modeling. Coming out soon, in the February issue of V, plus size women will be showcased like other models-the way they believe it should be done all the time.
Let's face it, the average woman is not a size 0 or a size 2, and the average plus size model, size 12 or 14, isn't close to the average plus size woman at size 16 or 18. When we are shown pieces on the runway-it's hardly ever our size, so do designers really understand us? Are they really able to dress our shapes in the most flattering ways?
In the most recent issue of Vogue, there was another article about size 4 being too big. I was alarmed once I saw this on the cover as many of us still consider a size 4 on the smaller side. This is yet another example of the fashion industry's eye on size. As our scales and national weight average go one way, our models go the complete opposite extreme. Will we ever find a happy balance? For now, it's great we get to see plus size models on the covers of magazines, being celebrated rather than condemned. For underweight, average, and overweight women everywhere, it's important to recognize your true shape and size and find a healthy balance in your lifestyle, no matter what side of the scale you end up on. :) What do you think? As the temperatures continue to stay on the lower side of the scale and our heaters can't crank enough heat to even closely compare to our usual Florida sun, we find ourselves layering and layering all that we have to keep warm. The bad news is-it's going to be cold for quite a while. The good news is-retailers are now marking down their winter collections to make room for spring, so that cute sweater you've been admiring in the store window is now being discounted. And, I know, we all love discounts! :)
When I was at the mall shopping yesterday and continuing online when I got home, I stumbled across some of the cutest sweaters I have seen in quite a while. Ann Taylor makes basic sweaters made out of luxury material with a dainty accent like a ruffle, pearl buttons, or a little lace to add a unique quality to it. (And, if you are shopping online, hurry to get an extra 25% off clearance!) I also stopped in the GAP and got a long sleeve shirt for $5! Nice. :) And I know Old Navy has been having an amazing sale on all of their winter coats-some of the cutest, cheapest basics you can get and they'll last you for years. :) Want a nice oversize sweater to just lounge in? New Years Resolutions and You: Feel Good About Yourself From The Start

Now's the time we all mark our calendars scheduling days to go to the gym, setting up a healthier eating schedule, and writing down lists of things we could improve about ourselves. I've certainly done this! When I was watching the Today Show this morning, they referred to the fact that women are scrutinized about their bodies so much more than men. That it is acceptable for a man to be a little 'hefty' but even an average woman receives a few distasteful comments now and again. This is really sad. Body image is something that is not only a New Years issue, but is often a year round issue for many women. As I continue exploring the different body types through this blog, I have come to learn that it's easy to dress any size and any shape. You just have to do a little homework! :) No body type is better or easier than any other, we all have tricks of the trade to help us feel and look great!
Starting off this year, we all can and should love the body we have. It is also okay for us all to want to get in shape and tone up a little, but what we need to do is to set realistic goals for ourselves, not outrageous claims trying to become a mere toothpick. If you are in college, check to see if your school provides free nutritional counseling. I know ours does. (Go Gators!) Also, check to see what the personal training programs are like and if they have a free fitness assessment. These two simple things, which sometimes take more effort to initiate than to actually complete, will be two of the best presents you can give yourself this new year. Finding out exactly what you should do from an expert, will help you achieve your goals so much more easily. You may have been going the complete opposite direction of reaching your goals!
So, I'd like to wish you a Happy New Year and good luck on all of your resolutions. Don't be afraid to set goals, it's better to write them down and try than to not recognize them at all! As we once again begin a new semester and the temperature is dropping as we hope our grades won't, it's important to stay warm and not sacrifice style at the same time! Florida girls like me, the ones not used to this chilling temperature situation, will want to grab every single thing from their closets and layer layer layer keeping warm and not freezing to death (even though it's only 30 something degrees out!). Many of us, will either choose this direction and sacrifice style, or some of us may choose to wear the cute delicate sweater we got from J.Crew for Christmas which makes us look amazing but keeps us shivering until the bell rings. Why do we have to choose between style and warmth? Well we really don't.
Don't be upset thinking you can't wear your new cute sweater, the key is layering! Grab one of your go-to camisoles and place it underneath your sweater, something that complements the colors of course. Then, grab your ever dependent winter jacket and throw on a great scarf, cute beanie, adorable mittens, or even a huge ring. Just a small, but noticeable accessory can make your jacket seem different than ever before, and keep you feeling stylish. Jeans are a great addition to any winter outfit, but don't forget tweed skirts and tights, they can also keep you warm too! Pair with a great pair of boots if it goes along with a more casual look you are aiming for, or feel free to step it up a notch with cute booties or flats.

Body Type Showcase: Pear Shape

About 20% of women are considered Pear shapes, and probably 100% of them don't want to think of themselves as a piece of produce. (Well you're not!) :) Pear shaped women are smaller on top with a small waist and carry most of their weight around the lower part of their body creating a curvy feminine shape. There are some tricks of the trade to show off your body in the best light and some things you should avoid at all costs. The most important thing you have to figure out is how to balance the two parts of your body. Lucky for you, it's really not that hard! Love to wear prints and bright colors? Wear them up top to draw more attention to your face and the upper part of your body. And, feel free to wear big, bold jewelry or gorgeous headbands to draw the eyes to the upper part of your body first. Capped sleeves or big puffy sleeves are also great to create an illusion of broader shoulders-a great example is a picture to the left. All this focus on the upper part of your body doesn't mean that you should hide or completely ignore the bottom part of your body-that is something to embrace for sure! A-line skirts or dresses are the most flattering choices to show off your curves and balance your bottom and top half. Remember not to forget that tiny waist as well-accentuate it with a great belt or a dress that cinches at the waist. If you love pants, pick some that are a tad loose and flow away from the body; a front pleat will also add length. Trouser shorts are also great, but remember a looser fit is best (not so loose you are swimming in them but not so tight that it's torture to get them on) :) Be a proud pear and dress your body in the most flattering way possible by following these easy steps. You are lucky to have the body type you do, now go show it off! :)

But it's really not that hard to put together a comfy, Lovely Library Lady outfit in seconds before you run to your exam.
There are a myriad of gorgeous sweaters designed from Diane Von Furstenberg to Ralph Lauren to Old Navy! Sweaters, especially the long cardigans, are easy throw on pieces that can set a statement for an outfit. Look for sweaters with small details like a hint of shimmer, satin accents, or funky embroidery to take a common sweater into something unique. Throughout history, the hourglass shape has been sought after by many women, depicted in numerous museums as works of art, and respected by men and women alike as the ideal female body type. Hourglass figures are defined as a wide bust and hips and a narrow waist. Squeezing into corsets, many women in the 18th and 19th centuries forced themselves to acquire this shape. Fashionista Friday: Cold Weather and Curls

As the weather is officially changing (or so we think) and the humidity is finally leaving our sphere for a while, it's time to experiment with your everyday accessory-your hair! Some of us are born with natural, beautiful curls, others with painstakingly straight hair, and most of us were lucky enough to receive a balance between wavy and whacked out hair! No matter what hairstyle you wake up with in the morning, try changing it up! Who knows? You may find a great new 'do' to wear to your next holiday gathering!

Ever wonder how to get those beautiful blown out curls seen on magazine covers, runways, and the television? According to Jimmy Paul from Bumble and Bumble, first you should drench your hair in thickening serum, then blow dry it out and curl like normal. The thing to remember here girls, is once you curl with the iron, you aren't done yet! By pinning the curls back up and letting them cool, while curled, helps retain the shape better. Once the hair has cooled, it's time to let those curls tousle and show off your gorgeous hair. A hair tip I've discovered, hairspray your curls before you put them in curlers, your hair will react better!

If you are trying to get away from curling irons (and the heat) or simply don't have the time, try pinning your hair in different ways or experimenting with various 'updos'. One of the most famous bobby pin styles is the one showcased by Lauren Conrad and features the cascading french braid. Try it! Or, on the runway, a sleek, one sided part may be something worth doing. :) If you are feeling bold, fashion forward, or want to have some real fun, try making a real poof to your 'do' and experiment with big bows and big hair. The opportunities are endless no matter how long or short your hair is. However, I know today I'll be cherishing the cold weather in curls.

History of Pants: Going to War for Pants?

Pants in the 1800s was considered a 'dirty' word. Currently pants are something many women prefer to wear over any other article of apparel. The first thread of pants in history was in the 4th century by Persian women, but that trend came and went like big cloth scrunchies. Throughout the Victorian period, women continued to wear full length skirts, gowns, and corsets; suffocating layer upon layer. In the 1890s, women tried to introduce pants into the female wardrobe, but knickerbockers, as they were called, were quickly rejected by society and labeled 'unladylike'. The World Wars are to thank for our ability to wear pants. During World War I, many women had to take over jobs in factories previously held by men. Factory work was different than the outsourcing sewing work and taking care of the household, jobs many women predominately held during this period. Women finally had an acceptable excuse to wear pants and pull their hair back! During World War II, Rosie the Riveter advertised pants to women across the United States, as being patriotic, and the way to help this country to stay afloat became synonymous with wearing a pair of pants and getting to work.
Pants have evolved over time, from structured adapted male pants in the early 1900s to pants becoming a staple of the women's work wardrobe and taking on a more figure flattering approach. (A Pants Fun Fact:Until 1995, it was illegal in California to wear pants to work!) Rosie the Riveter wasn't the only woman to use the press to publicize pants, Audrey Hepburn wore infamous black capris in Breakfast at Tiffany's causing men, women, and department stores to go absolutely crazy. Pants are a wardrobe must, a closet completer, and something we shouldn't take for granted-we went through a lot to be able to show off our figure in pants!

Tights got you in a knot?

As the weather begins to get a bit chipper, you don't always have to resort to that pair of pants you've worn almost everyday for the past week. Skirts and shorts can be paired easily with tights to keep you stylish and warm all at the same time. What's even more fun are the numerous colored tights and patterned tights found almost everywhere! I just picked up some Betsey Johnson tights in pinks and blacks with subtle bows and flowers. Look to Gossip Girl for inspiration, tights are showcased on almost every episode! Pair them with flats or heels and you are good to go! Embellishments, metallic, animal prints, and bright bold colors aren't even the start of this trend. Dress up the winter clothes stacking up in your closet and have a little fun!
Don't be afraid to be a bit bold or add a little unsuspected color in your wardrobe. After all, you shouldn't let tights get you in a knot!

Style Me Monday: Feminine Clothes with a Masculine Twist

Love the look of huge oversize oxfords turned into dresses? Love your boyfriends jeans and sweater, but they just swallow you up? It's easy to rough up your feminine clothing, steal some from the men's section, or find some designers that share your sense of style and follow the reoccurring trend of feminine clothes with a masculine twist.

See that dress in your closet? Grab it. Remember those boots underneath your bed that you haven't worn in a while? Grab those too. Don't worry about what people may say, boots can be paired with dresses. Don't be afraid to mix with silky fabrics! It plays off the roughness of the boot and the softness of the dress to create a balanced look.
Now time to move onto your boyfriend's closet, your guy friend's closet, or the men's section at Macys. Search for items that are small or extra-small and fit closer to the body on the arms. Oversize oxfords can easily become feminine by adding a belt which accentuates the waist and creates a female shape. The toughest thing about wearing this trend, is making sure you recognize the female body form and don't forget it! It's important to recognize your curves and embrace them. Pair with some cute flats or a dainty sandal and you are good to go.
Afraid to be seen in the men's section? No fear, plenty of designers are embracing this trend and adding pieces to their collections. Look for plain wide leg trousers which can be easily paired with a light chiffon tighter fitting top. Make sure you add a blouse with a little detail, maybe some lace, ruffles, or even a little color to balance out the structured aspect of the pant. Blazers are also a male inspired piece, make sure yours has some structure to it and creates that feminine shape. And, if you are really feeling this trend, go for one of those fedora hats.
Masculine articles don't have to take away your feminine feel. You don't have to go all the way to stick with this trend either, just wear those wool skirts, cute sweater vests, or wear a shapely suit to work and you are on your way! So, look through your closet, or someone else's, and experiment with this hybrid of styling choices.

Good Things Come in Small Packages: Body Type Showcase featuring Petite Women

Many women search far and wide in order to find the right pair of jeans, experience the struggle and frustration of bringing items to a tailor and getting them hemmed all the time, and simply don't know how to make themselves look longer and leaner without resulting to a pair of heels that certainly aren't everyday wear. Petite fashion is often overlooked, since most models are 5'7 or taller. The reality is, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for a woman in America is just under 5'4. If that's the average, why aren't there more selections in the petite section and more designers designing for petite women? America's Next Top Model currently has a season based off petite modeling. Tyra Banks offers tips on how to pose when you are petite and how to extend the illusion of length in your pictures. Well how can we, who aren't models, do this in everyday life? Simple, we just need to pick out the right clothes.

First things first, if something doesn't fit right, just don't buy it. Unless you plan on getting it hemmed, don't buy it and find something that was made for your petite frame. There are many designers that have a petite section, you just have to look! Capri pants are one of the most difficult pieces of apparel for petite women; they never seem to hit the right place on the calf and just create a frumpy look. Beware of the capris! Instead, look for long boy shorts that hit right above the knee; these will lengthen your look and won't cut you off and break your body into pieces. If you are searching for pants, don't be afraid of high-waist or mid-rise pants. These will actually elongate your body, especially if they gain width as they approach your heel. The fluidity of the pant will make you look longer and leaner in an instant.

While perusing the dress section, look for empire waists (a flattering choice for most body types) and those that hit right above the knee. With skirts, make sure they hit above the knee as well and are either high waisted or break away from the hips to create an illusion of fluidity. (The worst thing would be a tight short mini-just think about the body break up!) If you're a petite, once a piece passes the knee, it either consumes your small frame or like those awful capris, breaks you into pieces. Caution, don't think that just because you are shorter, that tops can be converted into dresses. Definite fashion violation!

Moving onto the correct way to wear tops, look for items that hit right above the hips, not those which consume you or those that hit around the rib cage (remember, you don't want to break yourself up! You want to create a long, fluid movement of your outfit). According to What Not to Wear, petite women should also look for v-necks, which create an invisible line down the middle of your body, drawing the eye down, creating length. Accessories are another lengthening tool. Long necklaces and pointed heels are strong lengthening pieces while short chained jewelry and chunky rounded toe shoes may inhibit you a bit. (Just be careful with these!) Cling to those small belts and tie them around your waist when wearing dresses, blouses, and sweaters to create the facade of an empire waist, a higher waist.

Petite women shouldn't have to struggle with clothing choices, but if you just remember those few simple tips, you don't have resort to a limited petite section. The best petite sections I have found include: Ann Taylor, BCBG at Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren at Nordstrom, Dillards, and Macys, Vera Wang and Simply Vera Wang at Kohls, and Calvin Klein at Dillards and Macys. Embrace your short stature and dress yourself in the most flattering, and lengthening way. It's easier than walking on your tiptoes everywhere or wearing heels too high to walk in! :)

Headbands: The Endless Possibilites for this Eyecatcher

During a recent Gossip Girl episode, the character Blair was instructed that headbands were not college material. Is this wrong, or is this right?
Headbands are one of the best accessories a girl can turn to when she wants to jazz up her outfit a bit, hide a slightly bad hair day, or just wants a great grab and go hairstyle. Headbands have a reputation of only being worn by the younger crowd, but girls of numerous ages rock this trend. (I love my headbands!)

Headbands have taken on a new persona by adding peacock feathers, huge jewels and ribbons, and even lego pieces. Headbands come in a myriad of sizes and lengths; you can go for a simple and clean look or go long with drapery and tie behind the neck for a more 70s vibe. Headbands can additionally be worn for a variety of occasions from casual to formal. When showcasing the huge headband trend, just make sure you go simple on the other parts of the outfit so the headband is what stands out! One accessory that won't be leaving our closets or the runway is the headband. So grab one, wear it, and be fearless!

Honor a Veteran: Wear Military Inspired Clothing

Big bold gold brass buttons amidst navy blue wool in a structured style used to be worn by soldiers on the battlefield....well its not just for our gentleman in uniform anymore! We saw this trend showcased on the runway last year, but it has remained with us for another fall season. Today is Veteran's Day, so I thought it was only appropriate to talk about military clothing today! Military jackets can be worn with a pair of jeans and heels, to balance out the masculinity of the jacket. Anchors and tailored navy inspired shirts along with patriotic jewelry can be found from everywhere like Forever 21 to Juicy Couture. Usually anchors and naval wear are just for spring collections, but don't let that weigh you down, just go for it!
Oversize buttons, red, white, and blue, and structured caps are a few ways you can bring this trend into your closet. Navy blue stripes on white sweaters and shirts, high-waisted pants with buttons up the side, little gold clips on navy blue ballet flats, and gold ribbon accents scream military inspired! You can pair most items with a pair of jeans, leggings, or even a plain skirt, add boots for a more rough feel, heels for a more feminine feel, or little 'booties' for a balance in between. :) Make it as structured and simple as you'd like or go bold by adding colored tights and animal prints.
So honor a veteran today, not only by what you do, but by what you wear.

Fashionista Friday: History of the Dress

There have been many threads sewn into the history of the dress. Dresses have been a symbol for women for all cultures since the beginning of time. Native Americans wore dresses made of raw hide, women in Biblical times wore tunics, and queens of ancient Egypt are known as some of the most elaborately dressed women of all time. As economies grew and countries became more industrial, the size of dresses seemed to grow along with it. Women were no longer expected to take care of work on the farm, walk for miles to the marketplace, or raise families out on the back country. Women, especially those in England and among the elite social class, became more of a statue, a figure to look at and be admired and a prize to be won by successful men.

Playing piano, painting, and enjoying tea, women wore corsets and long dresses with hoop skirts made of under-wire along with feathers and curls in their hair. In the late 1800s, the hoop skirt was done away with and dresses became more streamlined, fitting the body a little more than ever before, from the waist down. This trend quickly was replaced by the bustle-the large hump, table looking object placed behind the backside of the woman or on the hips. (Can you imagine wearing this?) The bustle trend was showcased in Paris in 1883. In the Victorian period, the bustle left the building, and a new part of the dress was amplified-the shoulders. This period of dress history is referred to as the power dressing age,when women wore more structured looks.

As women expanded their social domains, the dress became more streamlined, comfortable, and flattering. In the early 1900s during the age of the flapper and economic prosperity, elite women wore gloves and satin gowns. The Great Depression forced people to go back to focusing on food rather than dress, and the fashion industry slowed down for a period of time. Dresses came back when the 'cookie cutter wife' of the 1940s and 1950s showcased the dress with a new and approved accessory-the apron. The majority of dresses were now mass produced and seamstresses decreased in number. Dresses were something every good wife wore when working in the kitchen or taking care of the kids.

As time has passed, dresses have increasingly shown off the female figure. They have gotten shorter and tighter, but designers have also come to know the female body better and depict it in a more flattering way. Some trends haven't left us-the bustle trend has been brought back minimally in the bridal and prom world and structured shoulders are often seen in the workplace. The empire waist is a trend that has not and probably will not go away since it looks so good on most women.

Dresses are a symbolic icon of womanhood and will continue to evolve overtime. Whether or not you love to wear them everyday (like me!), they are an important closet addition and wardrobe must! Dresses should not be forgotten as a large part of our fashionable female history.

Comfort Clothes On a Whole New Level

These days, especially in college, people don't get dressed up as much anymore. Is it that much more effort to throw on a pair of good jeans, some nice flats, and a blouse than it is to throw on some gym clothes and sneakers? Cozy clothes are great for a day to spend in the library and gym clothes are a must for working out, but 'comfortable' clothes are not always sweatshirts and sweatpants; comfortable clothes can be fashionable too.

Dresses are one of the best and most flattering pieces of apparel for women. They are comfortable, cozy, flowy, and you don't have to spend that much time figuring out multiple pieces for an outfit. Just grab some cute sandals or heels (if you want to go dressy), choose some accessories-like earrings, a necklace, tights, or headband, and maybe even grab a sweater so you are prepared for the weather, and you are now fashionable and comfortable in no time at all!
I believe there is a dress for almost every occasion, even tennis athletes are wearing them out on the court. Dresses may not always be an option for the activity you are doing that day, but they are always a fantastic option when you want to grab and go, be comfortable, and look and feel good all at the same time.

Jeans are a piece of 'comfort' apparel many of us cling to on a daily basis. What's more comfortable or more basic than a pair of jeans? Lucky for all jean lovers out there, it's just as easy to dress up a pair of jeans as it is to throw on a dress. Jeans can be balanced out with a nice top or some amazing shoes, keeping you feeling comfy while adding a little pizazz to your outfit. By taking advantage of the dark rinse and trouser styles, jeans take on an even dressier persona. Dark rinse jeans are perfect for a casual business meeting or somewhere you'd like to look mature, structured and put together. They are also great for evening looks; great for a dinner or movie! Throw on some jeans, a silky top and sweater and you are ready to make an impression in your 'comfort' apparel. (Personal Favorite: Ann Taylor Denim Jeans-best fit I've ever found!)

The days of 'comfort' apparel will never go away. As our lives get more stressful and demanding, many of us lack the time and energy to plan an extravagant outfit for the day. A great resource for comfortable and fashionable tips is the television show on TLC called"What Not to Wear". Hosts Clinton Kelly and Stacey London deal with hundreds of people who can't seem to get out of the blind comfort zone and accept that fashion can be comfortable! (Heels can even be comfortable if you learn to walk right in them!) Keep it simple, keep it comfy, and keep it fashionable and you can't go wrong! You'll feel good on the inside and look good on the outside, prepared to make a good impression on everyone you pass that day.

Fashionista Friday: Importance of that Investment Shoe

Fashionista. Reccesionista. Frugalista. Investista.

Everyone is talking about the economy these days. It's not only the biggest issue in the newspapers, our purses and wallets, or inside the stores, it's a huge issue for our closets. Yes, it may seem a bit silly to victimize our closets here, but everyone knows that the way you present yourself shows a lot about who you are as a person. How ambitious, detailed, and professional you are as well as your mood and activities for the day are all resembled by the way you dress. A bit more thought into daily wardrobe than some may ever consider, huh? :) Something that faces a shopper on an exciting mall excursion or bargain shopping hunt, is the choice between the super on sale, marked down so many times you can't see the original sticker,$8 pumps you'd be satisfied with or the top shelf $50 heels you fell in love with the first time you saw them but it is a bit more than you are willing to spend. Is it better to spend less and buy more or buy less and spend more? If we didn't have to worry about money, I bet most of us would love to buy as many $50 plus heels we could, but the reality is, most of us don't have that luxury. Personally, I'm a fan of investment. I don't always splurge, but what I do splurge on, I love so much more, take care of so much more, and wear so much more than their cheap counterparts. Don't get me wrong-look for the sales, price doesn't determine quality whatsoever. (I love a great find!) Just don't be afraid of the price tag, don't suffer from sticker shock.
While browsing the Business Day section of the New York Times today, the article "A Not-So-Guilty Pleasure" by Stephanie Rosenbloom caught my eye. Something appearing to fashionistas in Business Day? No way! The article goes on to describe how the sales in shoes are booming despite the rough economy and the mindset of cutting back. The reality is, everyone needs shoes, girls love shoes, you can use new shoes to spruce up and change up outfits, and shoes always fit! (Something that could make or break a shopping trip:when nothing seems to fit!)
The prime message that shoes present is one of investment. Remember those shoes your mom bought you for school, that were supposed to last forever but you just grew out of them or scuffed them up so much they weren't appropriate to accompany your uniform anymore? Shoes can be repeated throughout the week, can match multiple outfits, won't be grown out of (for most of us now anyway), and last a relatively long time. Really all you need to do with your shoe wardrobe is to make sure you have the basic colors and the basic styles-athletic, heel, casual, etc, and then divulge into a super high stiletto or a knee length boot, something that is for special occaisons and keeps you feeling excited about your feet! (and the rest of your outfit.) :)
In this frugalista time period, don't be afraid to spend money, don't be afraid to buy that shoe you've been waiting for (because high chances are, it's on sale now or will be soon!). Take advantages of the sales being promoted and stop buying cheap alternatives to the items you really want, invest, invest, invest! You'll be happier in the end you did, because you will wear it more and it will leave you feeling satisfied and excited about your feet, your wardrobe, and your life. Shoes create a stylish foundation for our wardrobes and create the beat of our daily adventures around town on and off the sidewalk.

Women in the Fashion Industry: Designers

On a recent Project Runway episode, it caught my attention when the female designers discussed women in the fashion industry. One would often think, that women dominated the field; we are the largest consumers, and we channeled the beginning of the apparel industry. Sewing was one of our early options to get out of the house and try to create business for ourselves in the time of male superiority and limited female roles. We no longer have to worry about limited job choices like we did in the early 1900s, but are we still limited in some way?
Most of the brands we know-Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vitton, Burberry, D&G,and Tiffany&Co, (just to name a few), have dominated mall space and closet space for a long period of time and are created and run by successful males. However, Diane Von Furstenburg, Juicy Couture, Coco Chanel, Donna Karan, and plenty of other female designers create the pieces we love just the same as the male designers and gain as much and sometimes even more success. Do men know how to dress women's bodies? Do they know us better than women do?
I think that the dilemma brought up in this episode, and that many people may bring to the table, isn't one worth fretting over at all. There is creativity, talent, and ability on both the male and female sides of the fashion industry. Whoever does it better, is for the consumers to decide; it doesn't matter if it's male or female, it all comes down to style.

Growing up in a 'not so fine' time

Many would argue that currently our country, our world is going through a 'not so fine' time. Our economies are declining, our happiness is lowering on the scale, our health is deteriorating, our government isn't taking the proper role in our lives, and our world is getting scarier and scarier by the minute. Has everything really just changed and headed on a turn for the worst? Throughout history, each generation has had a challenge, a point where all could be lost or all could be gained. My grandparents both served in World War II. My grandfather was in the navy and my grandmother was a W.A.V.E. Many of those who lived during the Great Depression and lived during a time of world turmoil, like my grandparents, were left with one of the same questions we often ask ourselves now-what's next? And, could it get any worse? One idea we have to accept is not to get ahead of ourselves, to be patient. We live in a world where everything comes to us at a click; our wants and our needs are satisfied within a timely manner and we have control of the situation. Somethings we simply can't control, some people simply can't be controlled; the only thing we have control over is who we are and where we are headed. In addition, we must remember as a country, as a nation, that our government is the best in the world, and why is that? Because we as citizens are able to do so much, make an impact, run for office, and stand for what we believe in. We can't give up when the times get tough, we have to stand strong and unite as a country. Events have occurred that have forced us to find similarities and comfort in one another in a time where privacy and independence have become highly valued. We must not forget each other, we must not forget that we are all in this together-we are not alone. Surrounding ourselves with the pressures of home life, career life, and school life have led us to accomplish feats many never imagined, but it has also added immense stress in daily life. Is it ironic that we are accomplishing more and more every day but feeling less happy by the minute? Do we ever really feel completely accomplished? Is anything ever enough? Growing up in such a busy time and pushy time is an exciting and advantageous thing! We are all lucky to live in a period of time where technology is unmatched and ever expanding, career roles are becoming more flexible and more personable (we have choices!), and where our dreams can become a complete reality. The truth is, we may be living in a 'not so fine' time considering our generation's high standards, but there have been other 'not so fine' times and we have the control to find and create a 'fine' time, and it all starts with us individually.
